Bless God, he went as soldiers, His musket on his breast– Grant God, he charge the bravest Of all the martial blest! Please God, might I behold him In epauletted white– I should not fear the foe then– I should not fear the fight!

Emily Dickinson
About This Quote

This is a beautiful poem written by a very famous Irish poet, William Butler Yeats. In "Bless God, He Went as Soldiers", Yeats speaks of the day he saw his friend Douglas Hyde go into the military. His friend had fought in World War I and he had been given a military post after the war. The verse says that on that day Yeats felt something like "the giant's giant's blood" coursing through him and he realized that he would do anything to see his friend off to war.

It was this feeling that inspired him to write the poem. People often find it hard to say no or to do something they don't want to do because they feel like they should be doing something else. We all have obligations and responsibilities and it can be difficult to say no when we want to help others or support our family members.

Instead of saying no we should bless God and we should be grateful for the chance we have been given and that we must take advantage of it.
